Root Canal Retreatment
In most of the cases, a root canal treatment can be successful for long term with proper care. Unfortunately, as any other dental or medical procedure, it is possible that some teeth won’t heal as expected and will become painful or diseased again after first attempt of root canal treatment.
Some of the reasons are:
- Complicated canal anatomy was not fully detected during the first treatment
- Poor final restoration/crown without proper margin seal or delayed placement of the final restoration/crown may cause bacteria re-contamination.
- Residual or secondary decay may expose the root canal filling material to bacteria
- Fractured or crack tooth
Retreatment procedure is very similar to a root canal treatment but harder due to the complexity of the tooth anatomy and re-infected canal. It will usually be carried out in one or two appointments. Due to the complexity, the cost of a root canal retreatment is usually superior to a primary toot canal treatment.
